type='text'>My software and website

I found the Storyweaver Deluxe Software and did my analysis on it. I think that it is a simple creative way to allow students to express and discover ideas. It helps them further develop their schema and use different writting techniques. The program is an elementary word processor with clip art and other features that turns a writting assignment into a short book.

The webcite was a Nasa website. It was informative and interactive. I really think that they did a good job of making it easy for any level to use and navigate themselves around the site while being educational.

How My blogspot helped me....

"I think that it allowed me to explore a technique of technology that is
increadably fun and easy. I took notes this semester on my blogger and it was
organized and quicker than me writing them. I could get them on any computer and
didn't have to worry about a notebook for this class really at all. I also like
the fact that at the end of the semester we have a documentation of everything
we have done. It is nice to look back and see that your time is worth while. I
like the fact that I can incorporate both my family and friends with my school
work as well. I hope that in the future I can have a least one of these for my
classroom and maybe one for every student."

Two cute dogs

  images
Originally uploaded by clairehires.
This is an example of how we post pictures.

Software and Internet review

I did the Storybook Weaver Deluxe software. She gave her thoughts on technology and its use in the classrom. She thinks because of NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND, the resently passes act that deams testing top priority, that technology integration has come to a hault. Teachers are more conserned drilling their students for the tests at the end of the year that they do not extend their lessons to incorporate technology. Other reasons Monroe states are:

"This has really cut into educational time, which these kids particularly need. In addition, the computer labs in many impoverished schools are inadequate for full integration into the curriculum, so what programs they do have are being used for programs like accelerated literacy and drilling for tests."

I think that she is right on. One reason for this is because I wanted to have ten or more books. My original project only has four. I also needed a different list for a variety of genres of books so I could have an additional field for the project.

Description of Learning Goals and Standards
Students should easily see when the books are due to read. It will also help organize and structure the reading schedule for summer. For general feedback for the student and myself I provided a drop box in order to rate the likeness of the books that they read.

4 Topic: Basic Skills
Standard: Operates basic technology tools and applications
5 Topic: Basic Skills
Standard: Diagnoses and corrects a variety of common technology problems.
17 Topic: Problem Solving/Decision Making
Standard: Uses a variety of technology tools to solve problems.
31 Standard: Reads a variety of materials for information and pleasure.
37 Standard: Adjusts reading speed according to purpose and rereads for comprehension.

Rationale for Technology
This organization of an ASSESS chart is more of a tool than a lesson in my opinion. It will help to put form and structure to the lesson. I think it is an application for teachers to use but is far too complicated for elementary or middle school children to use and apply in their lessons. I hope that the more I attempt (key word) to use this program the better I become at using it and even possibly letting others learn the knowledge as well.

Description of Lesson Implementation
Like I wrote previously. This would not be an efficient lesson nor would I attempt to let the students attempt to use this program. If I set the basic criteria up and their interaction was at a minimal than it would be useful. Say if a template was already put in place and all the students would have to do is put information in and use the drop boxes then I do not think that would be impossible. As far as the mechanics of setting up the program I think we should leave it to the pros.

Assessment
The completion of the graph, table, or query would be all the assessment that you could really do with this project. At most, if used frequently, you could have the students log or chart their progress of something throughout the school year. This would act as a supplement to the curriculum and not the actual substance.

Other Places to Use this Solution
I would use this maybe as some hanging up, professional chart that shows off the student’s accomplishments. I think that this could definitely be used in the privacy of the teachers room as far as grading is concerned. I could help keep teachers organized and in order for a faster and more resourceful education

What I Learned and What I would Improve it Next Time
I have learned how to use the program!! I think that is enough of an accomplishment for this project. If there is a next time, I will make sure I have a more detailed sense of direction to go in or I will just call Anne Davis.

References/Resources Used
Microsoft Assess
Seventh Grade Reading List

Excell Documentation

Claire Hires
IT 3210
Microsoft Excel Project
Literacy in over 40 Countries
I used an Atlas of World Politics and for this particular subject they named over 200 countries. I picked some of the most talked about countries and one’s that interacted with the reading list that has been the theme of all my projects. An Example would be Lebanon, because on of the books write about immigrants from Lebanon.

Description of Learning Goals and Standards

Students should be learning different literacy rates in different countries. Students should be aware of the differences in literacy between male and females. Hopefully through this observation they will discovery correlations between they the government puts into education versus the output of their population that is literate. This goal is important for them so they can see how much they could make a difference and be ahead in the world.

Grade 7:
Topic: Cultural Geography

Standard: Identifies various ethnic groups in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, and describes their impact on the development of the regions (e.g., linguistic patterns and cultural contributions).

Topic: Cultural Geography
Standard: Assesses cultural expressions of art, music, and literature.

Topic: Cultural Geography
Standard: Explains how social institutions (religion, government, and economics) influence the attitudes and behaviors of people.

Topic: Productivity
Standard: Creates, modifies, and edits documents using word processing and desktop publishing tools.

Topic: Productivity
Standard: Creates, manages, and utilizes information using spreadsheet tools and applications.

Rationale for Technology

I skewed the data for chart 2 to see if the children would notice. This would also be a retroactive lesson to show that data can be manipulated to let the reader think something than what the truth really portrays. When using graphs it demonstrates the extremes and shows the countries that stand out. If you were judging or making decisions it organizes the information to make it more useful to the reader.

Description of Lesson Implementation

I would, for any collection of data, sort through the most important or shocking data to do the chart. A suggestion would be starting out on a broad note and with technology implementation have the students focus in and do their own graphs and charts. Analysis is obvious to this curriculum, but also to understand how to read charts and graphs is imperative.

Assessment

I would have a series of questions awaiting the students that hopefully with the right guidance would not be hard. I would definitely give them the graphs and then require, as part of the assignment, have them choose their own data to do their graphs. It is imperative that they know how to produce simple charts and graphs for future assignments in all subjects.

Other Places to Use this Solution

There are many other places to use this technique of presentation of information. It is also one of the books that is included in the student’s reading booklist on my inspiration project.

Description of Learning Goals and Standards

Students will get additional knowledge of the book throughout the different websites on the power point and classroom discussion. This is important so the student will understand what they are learning; it makes it more personable.
Students will also do their own project do find self discovery to relate to the text that will include different aspects of technology.

Grade 8: Technology
6 Standard: Creates, modifies and edits documents using word processing and
desktop publishing tools.
7 Standard: Creates, manages, and utilizes information using database tools and applications.

Grade 8: Reading
40 Standard: Analyzes explicit and implicit main ideas, details, sequence of events, and cause-effect relationships.
43 Standard: Analyzes fact and opinion, persuasion techniques, bias, and stereotyping.
Grade 8: Literature
29 Standard: Experiences traditional and contemporary literature through a variety of media.
Rationale for Technology
By using this PowerPoint a discussion can be held that will be directed by the presenter. I could easily have a substitute do this lesson and it would be easy to follow. The direct links make it possible for all that information is there in an instance. It also indirectly gives the children an example of something I would expect out of them. I could maybe as an additional lesson go over a few pointers to navigate around PowerPoint.

Description of Lesson Implementation

I would present this PowerPoint after reading the Novel, Fever1793. This could also be an assessment to see who read by the deadline. Call on the students as well as let them volunteer to answer the posed question. Because there is another project that makes this project continue it will not just be a verbal lesson. Someone could take it further and put it on line and give specific questions to the URL’s that are used to make sure there is a comprehension of the additional material.

Assessment

The original assessment of the PowerPoint could participation of the discussion and knowledge of the book. The final paper/project will directly assess the student’s knowledge of the discussion, additional information, and the book.

Other Places to Use this Solution

Like said before, this could be used online. Therefore, this could be a project that could be given for homework or an extended project for extra credit.

What I Learned and What I would improve it next Time

To go back and modify this project I would be more specific of the requirements that the student needs to do for their project; possibly set up a rubric or a list of requirements. I have learned once many of these PowerPoint lessons are completed it will make future years of teaching smooth sailing.

References/Resources Used All connected to the PowerPoint.

Excel Documentation

In the work place, when presenting a topic, or convincing higher management of your ideas this would be appropriate to convey your judgments. Another suggestion would be in advertisement of a particular product. Any one could easily dismannerly skewed the data also the results are in the product producer’s favor

What I Learned and What I would improve it Next Time

Hopefully next time the data will be less and more precise. I felt that unless you saw the GNP’s for each country that the reader will be comparing it to America

References/Resources Used: Student Atlas of World Politics. 5th Edition. My entire project I have tried to reflect the importance and fun that students can discover in reading.

Description of Learning Goals and Standards
Students will read four books
Students will write four papers that will be analytical and opinionated
Standards: 8th grade
Standards: Reads a variety of materials for information.
Standard: Reads a variety of materials for pleasure.
Standard: Analyzes fact and opinion, persuasion techniques, bias, and stereotyping.
Standard: Adjusts reading speed according to purpose and rereads for comprehension.
Standard: Interprets written instructions.

Rationale for Technology
The creation of this newspaper through word publisher was time consuming but effective. There is a lot of information that is produced in an organized fashion. It is an idea to have the kids, or some type of club do the paper and produce results for other students. It could be like a mini newspaper every week. It helped the overall lesson by organizing the information, making it fun visually, and giving them a handout to take home as a reminder. Book Envy works for my lesson because it tells the students about the author of the book they are going to read and gets them excited about the future summer reading.
Description of Lesson Implementation
I would just hand these out at the end of any lesson. I would however allow the students to do their first read through it while they were still in class so if they had a question you could answer them. I plan on using this strategy in my classroom. It will not necessarily be a weekly assignment sheet but maybe a monthly reminder sheet. I discovered that it was easy, yet time consuming. It was fun and informative. The options are huge. You could build a template from scratch or use one of their hundred templates. I still have not figured out how to save the entire paper as a website. It only seems to save the first page of the newspaper. I would make sure that you set time aside to do this and do not do it unless you are going to be punctual about publishing it and efficient in making it.

Assessment
The students would hand in their papers that were assigned and explained in their newspaper. Everyone that you do could include some type of reminders for them to do. The five questions that are supposed to be read and followed will be written and evaluated. These questions directly relate to the standard.
Other places to use this solution
This would be a great idea for a work environment to use; either an office building, or the faculty at a school. Anyone could use Microsoft Publisher.
What I Learned and What I would improve it next Time
I think that one would have ego know how to navigate around a computer and save pictures to import on to the program. The only things I would have done are making it longer and more detailed. I feel like even though it is only 3 pages it is so short and I could make it extensive. Because most of the templates have volume number I think that was the initial idea.
References/Resources Used
8th grade book list

Marina Budhos Biography

The Endurance Movie website

Chapter exerpt from Chris Crutcher

Fun Lesson

In the website resources lesson there is a website the "Colorado's picture of the day." This particular book is on the book list that I did in my inspiration. It is primarily for 8th graders and is a more detailed example that develops my initial learning plans.

Claire Hires
Power Point Presentation: On the Book, Fever 1793.

This is one of the books that I used towards my initial learning project.

Notes on powerpoint

Visual Message Design: Points to Ponder

Find a Path- font, color, templates and background

--Font size ( Just right –20-54 )—remain consistent
--Font style ; serif, san serif, script, display
--Color; Do they complement. I cannot believe that I can actually make a web page and sift through graphs and programs. It seems intimidating if you have no idea where to make the first step when given an assignment that has to do with technology. I hope to learn even more; it would be useful to be able to create grids for grades or even more interactive lessons for the students in the future in addition to what we have been doing in class.
I feel that I have learned a lot in this semester, even thus far. I have learned how to navigate Netscape, how to create a website, how to use educational tools, like inspiration, and even learned how to make a blog. I really sense that I actually known what is going on in class and think that I am confident enough to help others complete their assignments. Most of the assignments, once told what the assignment is in a five-minute lesson, it is self-explanatory. These programs are not complicated, they were made for easy steering for beginners.
I find it straightforward and invigorating to be able to accomplish the making of a website or figuring out how to post pictures on my blog. I think that it empowers the students in the class as teachers to have the knowledge to apply in the classroom. Before I took this class I still wanted to be interactive with my students. I just thought that I would have to take hundreds of workshops or figure technology out on my own. Now I do not have to do that.
It is so important that the teachers of today know and apply technology in the classroom. The classroom is not going to regress, one day, to little or no technology. Our society is always looking at ways to improve it, make it faster, and easier to use. I would hate for any child in the year 2005 to have to graduate with out knowing how to use and navigate around a computer.

Claire Hires: IT 3210
Project Name: Stages of Reading “Paperless”
This project is to encourage and enforce reading throughout the grade level. It is also to implement further reading than expository texts or short story or lesson reading. Some of the books should extensively cover a variety of themes and ideas that run in unison of all the books. The proposed project should enhance the students reading level and interest level. Hopefully, through the technological support of the project it will not appear mainstream, or boring, to the student.

Description of Learning Goals and Standards
The goal of this project is to enhance comprehension of longer novels. I hope that throughout the semester the students will learn how to note, or annotate, their readings, to project further projects on a variety of novels. I also hope that the students will expand their use of technology through research of different online libraries, and other search engines. These search engines should give views of other scholars, students, and authors. I also intend that students after this project will be able to decipher the difference in a creditable author to a non-creditable author.

Standards: 8th grade reading QCC’s
31-reads a variety of Material and information
32-reads a variety of material for pleasure
36- Interprets literal and non-literal meaning of words and phrases
38-adjust reading speed according to purpose and rereads for comprehension
39-Interprets written instruction
40-analyzes explicit and non-explicit main ideas, details, and sequence of events, and cause and effect relationships
41-makes comparisons, predictions, and generalizations, and draws conclusions
· Technology integration research QCC
18- Uses technology and telecommunications tools to locate, analyze, synthesize, evaluate, apply, and communicate information.

Rationale for Technology
The technology in this project includes an implemented outline so the student knows expectation from point a to z of what is expected of them. The reading list, the resources of the lesson, and help with annotation is all hyperlinked to the graph. In order for this inspiration map to be interactive it would have to be found on the Internet by a student. I highlighted the steps and process in which to go about the project. In case of problems I even cited my e-mail address. I think the problems with this type of project would be in depth assessment. I think that the teacher would have to be intensely familiar with all of the books on the reading list and stick to due dates as close as possible. Just because the students are having fun I think it is important to still be strict in grading and evaluation.

Description of Lesson Implementation
It is hard to set up the inspiration under Netscape. I would try to figure out a way to give them the graph and websites without having them depend on Netscape or Inspiration, these two programs are not popular or absolutely need. Allow the student to be as creative as possible (i.e. Let them read in the order they want, let them pick their own themes.) When you set up the map in inspiration give them specifics so students do not find loopholes and then every year add on to eliminate the ones that did find those loopholes. I also think that the class should be advanced enough to handle the level of technology that is involved. Another good idea is to have the equipment and “construction hours” available for the students to work on their assignment in case they need extra help or do not have the material at home.

Assessment
The final project will be the final assessment of the project. The building activities, such as the online forums and discussions with the teacher and other students and the research will be helpful to the students, but not rigidly assessed into the grade. It will be obvious if these tasks are not completed by the lack of direction and main point in their final paper

Other Places to Use this Solution
They might go on to use this strategy on a college level. It could even give them an insight on how to start a final or big project in any grade level in the future. The simple process of reading, discussion, research, and then analysis is not new, but when presented this way it might be refreshing.

What I Learned and What I would improve it Next Time
This project, as a student, allowed me to explore a long-term project and analyses of student’s progress. I would try to make the project more clear-cut than this outline. Hopefully over time ideas like these will mold into creative creations.

References/Resources used
QCC resource
Stages of reading “Paperless”—
8th Grade Reading List

Notes 2/24/05

Inspiration Notes
What?
-To motivate student thinking
-To outline writing assignments in order to develop deeper understanding of concepts
-To plan for projects and research
-Create visual tools to address different learning styles

Why?
-Clarify thinking
-reinforce understanding
-integrate new knowledge
-identify misconceptions

How?
-Single computer as teacher tool
-single computer with students
-Cluster of computers
-lab setting

cute picture

<div style="float: right; Why do we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.?

Description of Learning Goals and Standards
• In this lesson students will be reading 3 different texts: ‘I have a dream’ speech, a story about the Alabama boycotts, and a commentary from a newspaper. This is to challenge and motivate the students to realize the changes made by MLK Jr. during the civil rights movement. They will learn to navigate around my wonderful website. They will also engage in different perspectives of the MLK Jr. experience. There is no specific QCC for any black leaders, including MLK Jr.
• This is the only standard I found which that covered anything near the civil rights movement:

24 Topic: Post World War II
Standard: Categorizes the economic, social and political changes in the United States and Georgia since World War II including
- segregation, desegregation and the Civil Rights Movement
- patterns of immigration
- role of women
- advancement of technology, and
- impact of drugs and gangs.

Rationale for Technology
I made a website that incorporates three websites along with thought provoking questions. This is a way instead of having to bring in packets of worksheets to read, the children can just scroll down the page and read. The advantage would be that the website is fast and gives exploratory options if the student would want to later investigate further. It also provides a visual aid of pictures and fun graphics to keep those who learn visually integrated. Unfortunately some students read faster than others and perhaps an activity or extra credit assignment should be put aside for them.

Description of Lesson Implementation
The creation of the website was fairly simple. Through practice I think this would be a great way for teachers to assign homework. Not only will it be environmentally friendlier but it would also be accessible all of the time. The deficient part of having websites is that not everyone has one at home but public libraries and the school should have available time for those students. I would not do this activity everyday for the fact that technology is not always reliable as I have come to figure out.

Assessment
I will read the student responses and give them feedback. I would also have a discussion to summarize and share some of the opinions of the Big Questions with the rest of the pupils in the class. The first two question’s on the website might involve them to do additional research to find the answer. They will also be turning in one URL for part of the grade.
Other Places to Use this Solution
I think that this website could be used at all different grade levels even though the standard is used in fifth grade. Since the questions are thought provoking and opinionated, the evaluation and assessment could be extensively profound to listen to and grade.

What I Learned and What I would Improve it Next Time
I would make the lesson more extensive. I would also like to give them views of possible articles of that time, the reason that this particular leader stood out so much. If time permitted possibly assigning the students to investigate further, maybe even write a paper.

References/Resources Used
Blacks' bus boycott in Alabama remembered:
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/metro/20050217-9999-2m17hattie.html

Young students learn about King
http://www.macombdaily.com/stories/021705/loc_mlk001.shtml

Martin Luther King, Jr.: "I Have a Dream"
http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/Ihaveadream.htm

Funny picture

<div style="float: right; They will figure out each problem in three different forms: decimals, percentage and fraction. The classroom activity sheet will be passed out with a variety of scenarios including dice, a sock drawer, and cards. After students have completed this they will have a take home activity. The next class their take home activity will be discussed along with the discussion questions. (i.e. Mane professionals that use probability. Give examples.)
Description of learning goals and standards: Students will learn what probability is, learn what different ways to express probability numerically: as a ratio, a decimal, and a percent, and learn how to solve problems based on probability.
QCC Standard (grade 8) 38- Identifies possible outcomes of simple and compound experiments, and predicts or describes the probability of a given event, expressed as a rational number from 0 through 1.
QCC Standard (grade 7) 37- Conducts and interprets a compound probability experiment.
QCC Standard (grade 6) 45- Explores the relationship between actual outcomes (experimental probability) and expected outcomes (theoretical probability).
Rationale for Technology: Instead of distributing worksheets I think it would be better (if computers are available) to find a program that the students could use. This way they would have a visual element to the problems. The work would also go a lot faster and possible save room for the discussion at the end of the class instead of the next day. Not only would assessment be faster, but the students could get in more problems to better understand this material. The draw back, once again with technology, would be the accessibility to the computers.
Description of Lesson Implementation: I would condense this lesson because it does not go in-depth with probability. This lesson is for a better understanding of probability. As seen in the standards this lesson could be used in a assortment of grades and could also be built upon. The passing out of the worksheets seem a little dry to me. This is why I suggest a computer program or even physical descriptions and objects to go along with the lesson. This will help to include a diverse learning pool.
Assessment: The scoring is either a 1-3. Three demonstrates a strong understanding, participation in class and with the worksheet. Two demonstrates a moderate understanding and their ability to complete worksheets. One is when they demonstrate a weak understanding of probability usually seen through their participation.
Other places to use this solution: I think this can not only be used in a variety of grades as shown through the QCC’s but also a more extensive project that could show the students the use of probability, such as “Probability in Advertising (see URL).”
Improvement for next time? A little less of a drag and a little more interactive. Worksheet and computers get to be stiff and mechanical.

Lesson plan 1

Lesson Plan One: http://discovery.com/lessonplans/programs/metricworld
Claire Hires
Project Name: A Metric World
Summary: The students must discuss two systems: the English and the Metric. Make a list of common things, with the participation of the class, about things we measure everyday. Split into pairs to translate the list into the metric system. For a homework activity write a journal entry about a ‘ day in the life of the metric world.’ Evaluation vary from 1-3.
Description of learning goals and standards: Students will learn how to convert quantities from eh English system to the metric system and think about how many ways in which measuring quantities is a part of out daily life. This is important because the student will become aware of the use of measuring and discover the different fields in careers that measuring is used, such as architecture.
QCC standard (grade 8) 28- Selects and uses appropriate customary and metric units of measure for length (including perimeter and circumference), area, volume, capacity, weight /mass, time, temperature, and angle measure.
QCC standard (grade 8) 29-Converts from one metric unit to another metric unit and from one customary unit to another customary unit (length, capacity, weight/ mass, time, and money).
Rationale for Technology: In the lesson plan they have to have to do a take-home activity sheet and write a journal entry or letter about a typical day if they were to waken in a world that used only the metric system. Instead of them doing this at home I would set up a chat room where all the students would participate from the school or home and create perhaps the first chapter of a book together about their “metric world.” As the semester progressed they could keep up with the ongoing novel and eventually create their own study guides and fun memorabilia. This would still allow them to reach their goals and objectives of this lesson but also allowing them to interact with the other students. The only disadvantage I see is the fact that some students do not have a computer at home or maybe another kid’s computer is broken. This would probably work better in a computer lab.
Description of Lesson Implementation: This lesson would be a great interactive lesson. I would first make sure that when the pairs are spit up that they have a variance in height. This will allow for a difference to be seen in the metric students. The students are handed a sheet with different question to help them to convert back and forth. This perhaps may get a bit mundane for the students after the first few so I would suggest adding to the list by making them find 5 things in the room and then convert them so they will stay on task. The extensions that are mentioned in ‘The Metric World’ should be homework (the Grocery Store Math and the History of the Meter) and make the interactive chat room between the students part of the class. This would be a great introduction in Chemistry so the students can become familiar with terms in future experimentations. Unfortunately, the students need to be told when the Metric System is appropriate to use.
Assessment: The scoring is either a 1-3. One point will represent ineffective cooperative work with partial completion of the take home work sheet (or chat room) Two points will be given o the students that do somewhat cooperative work and determine most of the measurements. Three will be given to the students that so cooperative work with their partners and have the ability to go above and beyond to come up with plenty of examples.
Other places to use this solution: I think this can not only be used in a variety of grades but also in a variety of science classes along with math classes.
Improvement for next time? I would put the students into larger groups for more of a comparison. This will allow them to not have to be so bored with only two things to compare.

Examples on the internet

The examples of 7000 level classes was extersive but not overwhelming. For one, a high detailed middle school curriculum is needed in order for a complete understanding of what I am going to be teaching. I will also need details of other people's ideas to either provoke mind or sometimes involve theirs. This could happen through their sample lesson plans or through their archives of their past experiences. Just to be updated I found two sites: one health related and one in depth about the news. Both of these sources seem to be reliable and are backed by trained proffessionals in the particular field. Lifestage is a particular site where from A to Z to give unit examples and a variety of other resources.

Johnny: My godfather

  johnny
Originally uploaded by clairehires.
i am sure this look is familiar to most of the family. Claire Hires
Theme of the lesson: Learning to read outside of the classroom.
Target grade level: Fifth grade. But depending on a child’s reading ability this could account for grades above or below.
Initial idea for the overall goal: For students to make a cross between reading in the classroom to reading at home. The crossover between efferent reading to aethsic reading. I will try to have the children reading a least one book, of their choice, per week. This will increase their ability to read. Hopefully this will increase their fluency, decoding, and vocabulary skills.
Sample QCC’s:
Grade 5 Language Arts:
Standard 24- Increase in sight vocabulary.
Standard 26- Reads with fluency and expression.
Standard 16- Increase in vocabulary to reflex a growing range of interest and knowledge.
Standard 19- Reads a variety of material for information and pleasure.
Grade 5 Technology Integration-
Communication:
Standard 10- Be able to use telecommunication skills and on-line resources to communicate with others, gather information, and express ideas.
Basic Skills:
Standard 5- Operates basic technology skills and applications.
Productivity:
Standard 8- Uses multimedia tools to express ideas.
Initial ideas for activities:
First of all, this could be done in any subjects. Reading, just like writing, is a skill that is needed in all subject areas. I would try to veer away from giving my students a list of books, I would let them explore the library and pick out a few books in their related subject. Then those chosen books would have to be approved by the teacher, me. They would be required, each night, to read at their own pace. However, they would also bring their books to class and as a warm up activity they would reads for about 10-15 minutes. This will also allow the children to get quiet and organized for the start of class. Assessment on this would consist of book reports. Short reviews and reflections on the stories they read. At the end of this projected book reading experiment I will ask them to find a link between all the books that they had read and design a PowerPoint to be presented to class as final projects. This would take a few class periods to show them how to use the PowerPoint and possibly all of us do one together. PowerPoint projects are a little on a higher level than them but very easy to maneuver around. It would be hard to put them in groups because each student is already going to be dealing with their multiple, read novels. This would be an entire semester project that could string in and out of different units and other lessons. I do not see how they think in such a manner. I personally grew up with computers, but never was a capable of going further than writing a paper or sending an e-mail. In this course I am going to expect a quality e-portfolio and an extensive web blob (?). I, unfortunately, have not had any classroom experience with the children in my field. In the classroom at Georgia State, I have however seen and used overheads, power points, and videos in place or aiding a lesson.
These tools in the classroom allow me to grasp a better concept or create an opening to a subject area and investigate above and beyond the protocol. One thing that I have still not seen a lot of is how to navigate around the internet to get to specific internet cites that are user friendly and interactive for my future students. I would also like to learn how to program software to any computer (of course beyond the ‘put in the disk and press start’).
I think that overheads and chalkboards in the classrooms are outdated. The more up to date classrooms that I have seen have dry erase boards and a projected computer. The white dry erase board serves as the back drop for the computer and the screen also plays videos, and can be used as an overhead. I also like the concept of having computers in front of every student. This could make them more familiar and interactive with technology, but on the downside it could also play as a distraction.
Technology is never going to stop improving. It is used in so many different fields that it has become almost a necessity to know just to get a job. If one is not educated on the basics then they are going to encounter a struggle for the rest of their lives to catch up to the rest of the world. I hope to instill a small amount of concrete information into the minds of ours young adult minds.

Johnathan's comments

I reponded to Johnathan's comments today.
